Several areas of Makurdi, Benue State have been submerged following a heavy downpour that lasted for several hours on Monday 13th October.
The flooding affected areas like Gyado, Wurukum, Wadata, Achussa and parts of North Bank.
Many of the people living around the riverine areas were badly affected as they watched helplessly the flood sweeping away their homes, properties and farmlands. One of our medical team members in Makurdi Nurse Winifred Wuese who has been very supportive in conducting our medical outreaches in most of the IDPs camp is presently displaced too and is also in one of the Government Secondary schools camp around Coca-cola plant Gboko road, Makurdi.
While narrating her ordeal, Winifred stated that she left her house since Friday for treatment in the hospital because she was sick and was in hospital when her neighbors called to inform her that her water entered her house. She left the hospital in a hurry to see if she can rescue some of her belongings but by the time she got back, the house was already submerged so she couldn’t get close to the house and now she is at an IDPs camp with nothing to call her own. She is asking for support to help her buy food as she is still taking her drugs from the hospital.
Meanwhile, ETNI has started a preliminary intervention by sending her some money to buy foodstuff and continue with her medications. She was asked to look for another accommodation around the non-flooded areas so that she can live the camp as soon as possible.
Winnifred called back two days later informing us that she has gotten a new apartment which will cost her a fortune but she does not have the money as at the time to pay. ETNI responded by sending the money to her the next day and she has paid and as at today, Tuesday 22nd October, she is leaving the IDPs camp to her new house.
